Lighting Upgrade / Replacement

Lighting can make the difference and change the vibe of the entire room. There are so many different styles of fixtures and it matters that you get them  installed properly so you never run into issues. My A Plus Electric can make sure that you get a job well done, whether it be installing or repairing.

When dealing with non-working lighting, several common issues could be the cause. Here’s a list of potential problems to check:

1. Power Supply Issues

  • Tripped Circuit Breaker: A tripped breaker can cut off power to your lighting. Check your breaker box and reset any tripped breakers.
  • Blown Fuse: In older homes with fuse boxes, a blown fuse might be the culprit. Replace the fuse with one of the same rating.

2. Faulty Light Bulb

  • Burnt-Out Bulb: The most common issue is a burnt-out bulb. Replace the bulb to see if that resolves the problem.
  • Loose Bulb: Sometimes a bulb might be loose. Ensure it’s securely screwed in.

3. Issues with the Light Fixture

  • Defective Fixture: If the fixture itself is faulty, it might need repair or replacement. Inspect the fixture for any visible signs of damage.
  • Wiring Problems: Wiring issues within the fixture can cause it to malfunction. This might require a professional to diagnose and fix.

4. Switch Problems

  • Faulty Switch: A malfunctioning switch could prevent the light from turning on. Try operating the switch to see if it feels loose or sticky.
  • Wiring Issues: Loose or damaged wires at the switch can cause issues. If you’re comfortable, you can check for loose connections, but always ensure power is off before inspecting.

5. Electrical Connections

  • Loose Wiring: Loose or disconnected wires in the junction box or at the fixture can result in lighting problems. This should be inspected by a qualified electrician.
  • Corroded Connections: Corrosion at the connections can interfere with electrical flow. Cleaning or replacing corroded connections may be necessary.

6. Dimmer Switch Issues

  • Incompatible Bulbs: Not all bulbs are compatible with dimmer switches. Ensure that the bulbs you’re using are rated for dimmer use.
  • Faulty Dimmer Switch: A malfunctioning dimmer switch might cause flickering or non-operation. Replacing the dimmer switch might solve the issue.

7. Control System Problems

  • Smart Lighting Issues: For smart or programmable lighting, issues may arise with the control system, app, or connectivity. Check the app or reset the system as needed.
  • Remote Control Problems: If using a remote, ensure the batteries are fresh and the remote is working properly.

8. Overloaded Circuit

  • Overloading: An overloaded circuit can cause lights to malfunction or dim. Ensure your circuit isn’t overloaded with too many devices.

9. Ground Faults

  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) Issues: If your lighting is on a GFCI circuit, a ground fault could cause the light to stop working. Reset the GFCI outlet and check if the light works.

10. Electrical Code Compliance

  • Improper Installation: If the lighting was installed incorrectly or does not meet code requirements, it might not function properly. Ensure that installations comply with local codes.
